Reading

We will continue our unit called “Nonfiction Readers Learn about the World.” We are exploring nonfiction text and comparing multiple books on topics students wanted to learn more about. We are also focusing on retelling important information from their books.

Writing

We continue to develop our craft of writing persuasive letters.  We have focused on stating our opinion to the appropriate audience, coming up with the best reasons to support our opinion, and having a closing for our letter.

Math

We have been learning that 2 digit numbers are made up of some tens and extra ones.  We have also been learning to add 1 digit numbers to 2 digit numbers.

Social Studies

We will begin a unit called, “Me on the Map.” Your child will learn about maps and globes and locate where they live on a map. Your child will need to know how to write his/her home address. Please begin to practice this at home.

Reading

We started a new unit in readers workshop.  In this unit we are learning about non-fiction text. We have discovered that non-fiction books are true and we learn from them. We also learned that non-fiction books have text features that help navigate the book. We learned about the table of contents, headings, captions, indexes, keyword/bold words, and diagrams. All of these text features help us to learn the information in the book.

Writing

For our poetry unit we have been learning to write different kinds of poems. We have tried Acrostic, Color,  Shape,  -Ing, and I Like poems. The students really enjoyed this unit.

Next week we will be learning to write persuasive letters.  These are always fun to read!

Math

In this math unit we have learned that teen numbers are made up of 1 ten and some extra ones. We also learned different strategies to add numbers together to get a teen total. We have learned the count on method, the make a new ten method, and the add with doubles plus 1 or minus 1 method. These are just different strategies we teach.
