January 30 Update…

The kids are doing a great job and working hard to earn points on our new “Bravo Board”.  The kids are learning to work as a team with the kids at their table.  At the end of the week we will tally points to see what table is working best together and will get to display the “Bravo Flag” at their table.

  • Our Valentine party will be on Friday, February 13 from 12:00- 1:00.  Feel free to stop by if you can!
  • We will be opening Valentine cards in the morning before the party.  Your child may send in their valentines any time that week.
  • Please have your child bring in their 100 day project on February 10.  Your child will be sharing their projects with the class.

Reading

We will complete our unit called “Nonfiction Readers Learn about the World.” We explored nonfiction text and compared multiple books on topics students wanted to learn more about.  The kids enjoyed doing nonfiction reports with their 4th grade buddies!  See pictures below!

We will begin a unit called, “Me on the Map.” Your child will learn about maps and globes and locate where they live on a map. Your child will need to know how to write his/her home address. Please begin to practice this at home.

January 16 Update…

The kids are adjusting well to our new year and being back to school.  We just recently finished spelling out ALWARD for a reward of donut and movie which was voted on by the class!  We are remembering what it looks like to be a good listener and to be respectful to each other.  We are getting close to our 100th day of school and are working on preparing ourselves for 2nd grade! Please continue having your child read their WEB baggie books and return them for new ones as often as they like.  If your child hasn’t read them in awhile please have them do so!

Reminders:

  • If your child has a summer birthday and would like to celebrate their half birthday.  Please let me know when!
  • On Tuesday, January 20 from 6:30-7:30, Alward will once again be hosting a Math Night. We will also be introducing the One Book One School program.  Hope to see you there!
  • Please label snow gear with your child’s name. All those black snow pants and boots look alike. It will be much easier to find lost hats and mittens if they have a name.
  • Students do not have school on Friday, January 30 or Monday, February 2 due to staff professional development and midwinter break.

Reading

We started a new unit in readers workshop.  In this unit we are learning about non-fiction text. We have discovered that non-fiction books are true and we learn from them. We also learned that non-fiction books have text features that help navigate the book. We learned about the table of contents, headings, captions, indexes, keyword/bold words, and diagrams. All of these text features help us to learn the information in the book.

Writing

We began learning about our newest unit- How To writing. I n this unit, we will become teachers and write steps to teach our audience how to do something!  To inspire us, we watched some clips from the show, “Special Agent Oso.”  We learned and talked about his “3 special steps” and how they are just like our How To writing. We also spent some time looking at several How To books and noticed features such as: numbered steps and ingredients/materials.  We will have fun writing about different things we know how to do!

Math

We will finish unit 4 next week with a test on Tuesday.  We will begin unit 5 and will be learning about finding unknown partners with teen totals, subtraction with teen numbers, and problems with three addends.
